Información Turística de Agaete

Agaete

The fishing village of Agaete is one of the most beautiful places in the northwest of Gran Canaria. Opened to the Atlantic Ocean, it offers its visitor a contrat of landscapes where the sea and its green valleys, which get to the centre of the island, make this municipality have one of the most beautiful countryside in the island. It also offers an excellent climate and nicely warm temperatures.

The richness of the soil in this municipality has provived a profitable economy based on agriculture since the Pre-Hispanic era. At present, the agriculture in this village is based on coffee and tropical fruit trees.

But, with no doubt, its location on the coast characterises the local economy of this village. Fishing, which is still accomplished with traditional techniques, gives this municipality one of the most fresh fish that has let a seafaring gastronomy, unique in the island, be developed.

However, the service sector is, nowadays, the economical activity in peak in this area. The varied offer of restaurants joined to the lodging offer, specialized in Rural Tourism, has given this municipality the neccesary conditions to be a tourist destination. The peculiar beauty of Agaete arises from the union of sea and mountain, where a variety of leisure activities can be practiced. The traditional paths that go from the centre of the village to its summit in the Natural Park of Tamadaba, offer its visitor the opportunity to practice trekking in one of thef most beautiful places in the island where one of the biggest pine forests of Gran Canaria can be found. On the other hand, its sea-port invites us to practice nautical sports or just enjoy the clean and clear waters in the beaches and bays of the place.

The village of Agaete has a rich historical, artistic and natural patrimony, where some works of great artistic value are of note. Among these it is the triptych of the 16th century, dedicated to the Virgin of las Nieves and situated in its homonymous chapel.

This village is also basically known, not only in the region but also at national and international level, by its main festivity: "Fiesta de la Rama" (the festivity of the Branch). This festivity, which reflects the cheerful and festival spirit of the people in this municipallty, has been declared of National Tourist Interest since 1972. It is celebrated every August 4th, in honour to the Virgin of Las Nieves. It is said that this festivity has similarities with the aboriginal rite to ask for raín.

Agaete is, defnitely, a meeting place where the most authentic traditions are still alive and where the peace and beauty of its landscapes, among palms and pine trees, invite us to enjoy a varied and singular offer, which goes from leisure activities to culture and tourism.
